SNATS stands for Student Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and is a branch from NATS, which is, a national organization of professional teachers who love to teach their students to sing. They are best known for their singing competitions held twice a year in which students and past students are eligible to compete. Sophomore vocal performance major and member of SNATS Taleeia Smith says, “I enjoy being a part of the organization because every semester, the organization provides guest lectures about the health of the voice and how to properly take care of the vocal cords for music students in the music department.” This semester marked the second semester of SNAT’s Valentine’s Candy Singing Grams Fundraiser. These singing grams are decorative bags full of chocolate, heart-shaped lollipops, and conversation hearts that are delivered by members while they perform a Valentine’s song requested by the customer.

This semester, the ordering tables were located in the checkerboard lobby of MFA and in front of the Cafeteria on February 5-6th, and 9-10th. We delivered on February 12th and 13th. Ashley Phillips, president of SNATS stated, “In our two years of selling these singing grams, we have sold over 40 and we have sung a variety of songs from Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You” to James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” to Stephen Sondheim’s “Johanna”. We deliver to both males and females and each delivery always brings a smile and often a good laugh.”

The week’s festivities for SNATS might not seem to be noticed by most students, but in one case, junior communication arts major, Morris Mitchell said, “Walking out of the café, I just so happened to look at the table to my right, and said that I should buy a singing gram for the special lady in my life.” This event allows for people to do nice gestures for the loved ones in their lives.

SNATS plans to make the Valentine’s Candy Singing Grams Fundraiser an annual event, but in the meantime, on April 12th, SNATS will be hosting a masterclass with Ms. Indra Thomas, sponsoring a trip to Spivey Hall in April, and a nursing home visit with Mu Phi Epsilon on April 11th. Also, during next semester they will also be continuing their annual Schubertiade, and Opera Fright Night.   Students should be on the lookout for SNATS, as Phillips exclaims, “We have more events yet to come.”
