Kicking off the week of homecoming events was the anticipated Shorterfest talent show. Shorterfest is an annual event where students are given the opportunity to display their talents for their student body.

“This year was phenomenal,” said Chaz Bowles, senior history and political science major. “This year’s talent show had a wide variety of talent and was extremely fun to watch.”

There was a plethora of talent including several singers, musicians, interpretive performers, rappers, organization representatives that danced and a band performance. Most performers stuck with known artists but some were brave enough to debut their original pieces to the audience.

The line for the talent show backed down the stairs and out the doors of a packed chapel. Student Government President Mack Parnell hosted the show.

Fiona White, sophomore sports management major, complimented the show for being so entertaining.

“It was so interesting to see everyone show off their unique talent and have fun at the same time with the support of their fellow students,” said White.

The panel of judges seemed intrigued with the performances, and the crowd definitely let the performers know how they felt about the acts with booming applause and even a few standing ovations.

Prizes were given to the top three performers who were voted on by the panel of judges. Winning third place for the event was DeMarcus Simmons, who gave a moving interpretive performance using miming and hand gestures. Second place was awarded to Retha Tarleton, who sang a powerful piece by Martina McBride. Topping the charts of performers and being awarded first place was Kyle Coleman, who gave a crowd-pleasing, blindfolded piano performance of Bohemian Rhapsody, made famous by the band Queen.

Students are already gearing up for next year’s annual Shorterfest.
