Although 2016 has just begun, critics have already dubbed this the year of the film industry. This year theaters will be filled with different movie genres ranging from action, mystery, drama and horror.
Some students and faculty are just as excited for the release of the new feature length films.
In January, there was a constant flow of releases, including movies from top celebrities such as Kevin Hart who will appear in his file Ride Along 2 which opens in theaters on the Jan. 6. Hart plays the role of Ben, an aspiring detective trying to live up to the expectations of his brother-in-law and partner James, portrayed by Ice Cube. The two venture to Miami, Fla. as cops to solve a crime, but are faced with more danger than they expected. A lot can be expected from this movie in the way of comedy or action.
Audiences can also be on the lookout for the year’s first film adaption of the book series The 5th Wave, released on Jan. 21. In this action-packed film, Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Grace Mortez) races against time as aliens have come to decimate her planet all the while she searches for her younger brother.
“The film depicts a lot of action which is my favorite genre, so I am most excited for that and also the fact it portrays a strong female leading role,” said sophomore early childhood education major Remel Williams.
Another notable film released on Jan. 21 was Terminus.
“I think both films will be good, but the fact that they both come out on the same day may cause neither one to do as well as they would have hoped,” said Williams.
The following week on Jan. 28, Kung Fu Panda 3 was released for its third installment of the series.
The anticipation behind films such as Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 23), Deadpool (Feb. 12), and Captain America: Civil War (May 16) has been long awaited by fans of the Marvel and DC Universe.
“I’m very excited for this upcoming film because of how beneficial it will be to fans of Marvel and the DC Universe. This will be refreshing as a whole to see superheroes,” said junior biology major, Joshua Jernigan.
One thing is for certain about the year of 2016, and that is how large the line-up is for these up-and-coming films as they prepare to hit theaters in the next month. No matter what audience members watch in theaters, they will be met with a list of different choices awaiting them as the ticket booth.
“As a fan of movies about drama that depicts a human story, I am excited to see how these upcoming films leave an impact on people,” said assistant professor of Communication Arts Kelechi Benet.
