The SU Volleyball team received their championship rings Sept. 18, two years after winning the Gulf South Conference (GSC) in 2014.
Many players who were on the team two seasons ago are still on the team now as juniors, seniors, and even an assistant coach.
“After four years as a player and going on one season as a graduate assistant, being able to reflect back and finally receive those rings will always be one of my favorite memories,” Graduate Assistant Dena Pierce said.
The ring ceremony was held in the Harbin Room in the Price Learning Center, where family and friends gathered to celebrate the accomplishment with the players.
Some of the older players also came back to campus for the ceremony, including Tanequa Whitman, Anna Graham, Jasmine Crook and Erica Baker, all members of the 2014 team. Whitman now coaches for the University of Alabama in Huntsville, the team of the Lady Hawks ironically beat on the day of the ring ceremony.
“It was really odd knowing that she [Whitman] was on the other side of the net, but it was great getting to catch up with her and to see her doing what she loves to do,” senior Cheyenne Frady said.
The Lady Hawks have begun the season in victorious fashion, starting the season undefeated, going 12-0, until they lost to the University of West Florida. The leaders of the team believe this is going to be another successful year, and they hope to be back in the position they were in during the 2014 season.
“Being in my senior year now, I believe we have a legitimate shot to do it again and even go further than we did in 2014. The relationships we have build with one another are something special, and I believe that really translates to how we play on the court,” Friday said.
The Lady Hawks look to continue their spectacular play throughout the rest of the season, and the students and faculty of SU hope to see them back competing for the GSC Championship in November.
