On Saturday, Jan. 29, 2016, the Office of Student Life held another Intramural sporting event in the Winthrop-King Centre to provide students with exercise and relief from classes.
Coordinated by the Intramural Supervisor Devon Mason and Assistant Intramural Supervisor Scotty Kent, the event consisted of a free for all team dodgeball match. Each team consisted of five members and whichever team won would receive a $10 Walmart gift card for each of its members. Director of Student Life Melanie Lawrimore loves intramural events for all the benefits they provide students.
“It’s a great way for people to win one money, and also have a good time with their peers while doing something they will enjoy.” Lawrimore said, “The great things about dodgeball tournaments is that the participants tend to dress up in superhero, 80’s or 90’s attire and become really competitive.”
Although students and faculty did not compete in any costume attire, all teams still played with a competitive nature.
After an hour and thirty minutes of playing and beating out the four others teams, the winning team, which was composed of senior Miles Mendiola, junior Patrick Sanders, senior Will Lawson, sophomore Brandon Brookins, and Director of Residence Life Anthony Chatmon, won the grand prize. The team called themselves “HGA” which stood for His Glory Alone.
Students can choose a variety of intramural sports such as Sand Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, or even participate in an Xbox or PlayStation tournament.
Intramurals cater to all students by giving them a chance to pursue things they enjoy and also giving them a chance to pursue things they enjoy and also giving them the opportunity to try new things. Junior intramural supervisor Devon Mason enjoys hosting intramural events.
“It allows us the opportunity to set up a community involving different sports and various activities that not only keep the students active, but also helps students with communicating with one another,” Mason said.
Not only are intramurals a good way to tay in shape of meet friends, it also works by allowing students the ability to get involved on campus.
Through intramurals, students can receive leadership skills that will help them in their future careers. Senior sports management major Miles Mendiola enjoyed his time of playing dodgeball with his team.
“Aside from the sporting and gaming events that intramural have to offer, I truly believe it allows me the opportunity to connect with people better. It’s more than just passing by someone in the hallway, we are all having fun and just enjoying one another’s company,” Mendiola said.
The intramurals staff is always coming up with new ways to increase student involvement. Although not every participant can win at these events, students and faculty alike can find solace knowing that there will be more opportunities for them to get involved and win prizes–such as the upcoming basketball tournament.
In order for students and faculty to participate in any intramural events, they must sign up with the Office of Residence Life by completing an injury liability waiver.
In addition, students and faculty who are deemed eligible to participate must also bring their ID card to show that they are valid.
