Senior Julian Duncan performed a 60- minute memorized piano solo for his senior recital on April 11 in Brooks Chapel.

Duncan spent countless hours strengthening his memory and playing as much as he could to whoever would listen.

“Nothing is more important to a performance than the right kind of practice. It’s important to hold yourself to a high standard, but you also have to recognize that you will make mistakes on stage without letting it paralyze you,” said Duncan.

Audience members were given the chance to see how much hard work and dedication went into the Senior’s recital. Former Department Chair Dr. Tarrant believed some pieces to be the most convincing he’s ever heard.

Listeners were wowed by the pianist, and were able to appreciate the passion evident in the sound. Associate Professor of Music Dr. Jerico Vasquez noted that recital preparation requires digging deep into the interpretive aspects of the music.

“Julian’s performance was superb overall. It showed much intelligence, maturity and sensitivity to sounds and colors. His playing of the Bach’s Toccata in E minor was particularly special; he owned that piece,” said Vasquez.

Duncan attributed part of his success to a few special individuals who supported him on his journey.

“I owe a lot to Dr. Vasquez. The amount of time and energy he devotes to his students in helping them succeed is inspiring, and his style of teaching is clear and effective. I should also mention Dr. Lynn Worcester who was always available as a source of support, advice, and guidance,” said Duncan.

Duncan noted his appreciation for his parents for all the sacrifices they made in helping him fulfill his dream, and his girlfriend Emily Bateman for tolerating his anxieties when recital time approaches.
