Many have loved and even idolized singer-songwriter Taylor Swift for her country roots and southern charm. So, now that her newest song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is a catchy pop song, confusion arises.
Is Taylor Swift becoming another mainstream pop singer now? Has she abandoned her country roots?
According to TribLive, Swift has enjoyed crossover success in the pop world since her beginning. Songs like “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me” have had success in both of the pop and country worlds.
Since “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” has no taste of country in the song, there is question as to whether her country background is still as prevalent
Sarah Morrison, junior biology major, thinks that Swift has always had pop integrated into her style.
“I think she is one of the only artists who has actually mastered a pop/country crossover,” explained Morrison.
Swift has captured audiences of all ages with her autobiographical and relatable songs.
Dr. Regina Echegoyen, Spanish instructor, said that she enjoys the fact that her songs are inspired by her own personal experiences.
“Her songs reflect her growth as an artist and as a young woman. Her newest song, in my opinion, is her catchiest one so far,” said Echegoyen.
Although Swift’s new song was lacking her normal country “twang,” it was not lacking in sales. According to the Los Angeles Times, this single sold more than one million copies in just three weeks.
Along with the song’s fame, the music video for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” also caught a lot of attention.
The video is modeled after a “pop-up book.” In it, Swift is singing and moving through different scenes in a continuous shot. Also, the band members are dressed in forest-animal costumes.
Some find this weird, but others enjoy Swift’s charming performance.
Abby Stell, freshman pre-pharmacy major, says that the video shows a girl who know that she deserves better in her relationship.
“The video briefly and humorously shows a girl standing up for herself,” Stell said.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the music video features Swift in a flirty and lighthearted manner. Also, this source says that the oft-spurned country singer is going fully pop.
Whether Swift decides to remain rooted to her country background or shift more toward the pop scene, her dedicated fans will continue to show support.
Libby Grimes, Admissions Counselor, thinks that Swift is an equal combination of both pop and country.
“Her voice and musical arrangement helps her identify with the pop audience, yet her lyrics are heartfelt and easy to identify, which makes her more of a country artist,” said Grimes.
