With the 2014/2015 academic year coming to a close, students are beginning to chart their academic course for next year. One option to consider is study abroad.

According to the Institute of International Education, 283,000 U.S. students studied abroad in the 2011, 2012 academic year. Although a higher rate of growth than the previous year, this still represents a small fraction of U.S. undergraduates. Reasons why few students study abroad are varied, and include worries about graduating on time, athletic schedules, and financial concerns. However, the benefits of study abroad are numerous.

Students who study abroad may open new doors to employment opportunities. Companies appreciate cultural awareness developed during time abroad, while connections gained could result in future opportunities for employment or internships. Linda Palumbo Olszanski, Assistant Vice President of International Programs at Shorter University, talked about the professional benefits of studying abroad.

“Studying abroad is a necessity in today’s job market. Being able to efficiently move and function in differenct cultures is a priceless asset for anyone. That is why it is vital for students to start their journey early in life and plan their study abroad experiences” said Olszanski.

Another benefit to study abroad is language proficiency. While classes in many universities abroad are taught in English, students will usually have the opportunity to take courses instructing them in the language of their host country. In addition, the everyday experience gained through immersion in another language provides students the opportunity to develop their skills in a natural and practical context.

Finally, students who study abroad often create lasting friendships with people from all around the world. Many study abroad programs place students with host families native to the country in which they choose to study. In addition, students will have the opportunity to study with peers from their host country, as well as students visiting from other countries.

Olszanski spoke to the study abroad options available to students at Shorter.

“Shorter University is privileged to offer top-notch study abroad programs that offer a great range of possibilities for our students all over the world” said Olszanski.

Participation in Shorter University’s study abroad program provides students with the opportunity to study at a variety of universities throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. Programs include Fall and Spring semester sessions, Summer sessions, and Spring Break Programs. Students can choose from a wide variety of courses including language, liberal arts, cultural, and religious courses. State and Federal aid, as well as institutional aid in some cases, may be applied toward study abroad in either the Fall or Spring semesters. Georgia residents can apply the summer portion of the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant and HOPE scholarship.

Study abroad provides numerous advantageous for undergraduate students. While it may not be for everyone, students should be aware of their options regarding study abroad and consider them carefully.
