100 years ago, Shorter University was introduced to its very own literary magazine, the Chimes. The Chimes is a student-run magazine dedicated solely to creative writing and art, and today in the spring semester of 2015, that same magazine’s legacy continues. This year the Chimes will be celebrating the release of its 100th edition.

“Hitting that 100th issue mark,” says Chimes advisor, Renee Emerson, “is a huge milestone for any publication, especially for a literary magazine at a small school.”

To celebrate this achievement, the Chimes will be both inviting a guest author to join in the celebration and holding an official release party. Shorter students will have the opportunity to take a fiction master class with the guest author, Chantel Acevedo, in the Price learning Center basement on Tuesday, April 14th, from 5 to 6 p.m. This class is a rare opportunity.

Angelica Aranda, the editor in chief of the Chimes, says, “The staff has worked hard to prepare for the [Chimes release party] along with securing our guest author, Chantel Acevedo! We thought it was fitting to have someone who wrote historical fiction speak during one of our own historical moments!”

The Chimes 100th edition’s theme is also history after all!

Finally, on that same date from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Eubanks room, the Chimes will at last reveal its 100th edition during the release party. Within the release party, there will also be an author reading by the same honored guest, Chantel Acevedo.

The Chimes committee does not want to just stop at its 100th issue, however. There are many hopes for the literary magazine’s continued growth.

When asked about her hopes for the Chimes’ future, Renee Emerson also said, “I would love to see the Chimes one day incorporate many different majors… I would also like to see the Chimes begin to feature more online content – but one step at a time!”

Therefore, on April 14th, Shorter students are free to celebrate both the Chimes 100th edition and its future.
