The SU Panhellenic Council hosted a lip sync competition in the Chapel on Thursday, March 2, 2017, to raise money for their philanthropy, Circle of Sisterhood.

According to the Circle of Sisterhood website, the organizations aims to “break the cycle of poverty and oppression” for young girls in impoverished countries. Each year Panhellenic does a fundraiser to raise money for this cause. This is the third year that they have put on a lip sync competition.

All three sororities on campus participated in the decades themed night by creating two different teams. Each team came up with a dance routine to songs from the era that they were given.

Alpha Delta Pi members rocked to songs from the 80s and a few modern day hits, while the Zeta Tau Alpha ladies gave each college student a time-hop back as they recreated some iconic dance moves from songs of the 90s. Phi Mu offered a unique spin on the classic 2000s hits and showed the audience how 80s songs can still be fun today.

Cecil Robinson and Caleb Britt were the emcees of the event and provided entertainment for the crowd as they watched each group perform their dances. Robinson and Britt added a special touch to the night as they told jokes, carried on conversations with the audience and introduced the performers.

Each group performed well and created audience response; however, there had to be a winning team.

Taking third place were the ladies of Phi Mu’s early 2000s group who created lots of nostalgia within the room.

Zeta Tau Alpha’s early 2000s group took home second place for their unique throwback dance.

First place was taken by Phi Mu’s 80s group for their routine that showcased hits from the decade.

Emily Cheek, a freshman Phi Mu, was elated to be a part of the 80s group that won.

“I did lip sync because it was another opportunity for me to get closer to my sisters,” Cheek said. “I really enjoyed learning dance moves from my big [sister] and helping her. Winning was just the cherry on top of a great night!”

Residence Life on Shorter’s campus is unlike any other organization that the university has to offer. Many people want to be a part of the family that keeps Shorter’s student accountable and the campus safe. Resident Assistant/Director applications are available now for students who desire to be a part of the Res Life Staff.

The Residence Life staff at Shorter works to make sure that residents follow all university-established rules and regulations.

The Res Life Staff is a crucial asset to dorm life on campus. Oftentimes RAs and RDs are put in tough situations that challenge them and help them further their skills as a Res Life Staff member.

As many students are beginning to apply for the RA positions available on campus, those applying are beginning to think about why they want the job.

Freshman Mackenzie Staples is one of those students applying to be an RA.

“I want to be on Res Life Staff to make a difference in incoming freshmen’s lives. I love the idea of community and growing together in Christ,” Staples said.

So, why do we have RAs and RDs on campus?

Well, the RAs and RDs bring students from all walks of life together. They are there to be support systems for their residences and help those in need. Many students are far from home and may not have someone close to them who can be there to assist them in their needs.

Resident Director Tony Schnyders shows one of the rooms that will be offered as one of the “commuter hostel” offerings for Malone University students during inclement weather, on July 29, 2014, in Canton, Ohio. (Karen Schiely/Akron Beacon Journal/MCT)

Students who are going through tough times are offered Christian guidance to help them through their struggles.

The RAs and RDs are more than willing to be servants to their residents and others who attend the university. They give up their time and efforts to serve by being leaders, attending events on campus, helping students in need and setting up their own events for students.

The SU community wouldn’t be the same without the Residence Life Staff. They give a strong effort to make sure our residence halls, campus and students are safe and following all university rules. Their willingness to lead speaks volumes about each student and his or her character. RAs and RDs are students who believe in this campus and are willing to put forth the effort to keep our campus safe.

On Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, Donald J. Trump became the 45th president of the United States after his inauguration at the Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

As President Trump was surrounded by family, he took the oath.

As Donald Trump became President Trump, America witnessed history, which is significant to our nation. The oath of office has remained the same for many years and stands out as a powerful statement that past presidents have spoken.

Past presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were in attendance at the inauguration and were able to witness President Trump take the same oath they took coming into office. I believe that the support given by past presidents from both major political parties shows hope for our divided nation.

Not only did President Trump have the support of past presidents, but he also had the support of his family.

As Trump was sworn in, he was surrounded by his children. They were there to show their support for their father just like they have throughout his entire campaign.

I enjoyed seeing the reactions of his family as he was sworn in. Even in the midst of the division our country is facing, I think it was refreshing for Americans to witness the family aspect still present in Washington.

As this election has come to a close, Americans now have the task of deciding whether or not they will rally behind Trump.

As a college student, I see divisions within my own friend groups, and I think that this will either continue or wind down.

As a new presidential term begins, the controversy surrounding Trump’s presidency is already taking a toll on the nation, and many people are worried and anxious about what is to come.

As we begin this new chapter in American history, I believe it is important for every citizen to rally behind the new administration and see for themselves what Trump will do with his time in office.

College students, in particular, need to step up and help us begin the healing process that our nation needs.
